Money and Computers.
Two things we deal with all the time whether we like to or not. They can be used as a tool to give us freedom, increased productivity, and enjoyment, or they can enslave us and have their way with us. Despite the importance of these two M’s in our life, we have reason to believe that most people really have no idea what they’re doing with either of them. You may struggle with such life-altering questions as “What is the purpose of money?” or “Why did this machine just wipe out this report I spent all weekend putting together?”. The worlds of money and megabytes may seem like complicated black boxes that we’ll never figure out.
You may think that you should seek the advice of a wise, elderly sage—having withstood the test of time, wrestled with the two M’s, and come out alive. But we’re here to tell you that you are WRONG! Everything you need can be provided by a couple of young graduate students (and also roommates and friends) named Joe and Joey. And lucky for you, we’re going to provide it all right here on this blog!
So who are we? Joe is working towards a PhD (that’s right, one day he’ll be Dr. Joe) in mechanical engineering. He’s previously worked in IT and somehow also developed a wealth of tech knowledge that never ceases to amaze Joey (who often mooches off of Joe for computer help). Joey is also a graduate student pursuing an MD/PhD dual degree. When he started his graduate program and started noticing seemingly large sums of money being deposited into his bank account each month (that’s the wealth-building graduate student stipend being paid out!), he figured he should learn what to do with it. So after many hours spent digging around books and the web, he found some gems hidden in the rubbish (and has an answer for almost every one of Joe’s obscure questions).
And to be honest, that’s what this blog is about. We are not masters in our fields (or philosophers just yet). We are just two curious young men who have discovered some hidden gems in a couple key areas of life that we’d like to share with you. So join us! Conquer your greatest fears. Don’t be a slave to your paycheck. Control your machine before it controls you. And let’s see where this thing takes us!
A couple quick notes before we get started.
1) This blog is written for Young Professionals but is applicable to everyone.
Because Joe and Joey are relatively young (or so we tell ourselves) individuals just starting out in our respective careers, this blog is mostly geared toward the young, working adult who is just starting to make money and wants to make it work for them. HOWEVER, we believe that sharing what we’ve learned will be beneficial to people in all stages of life, including YOURS!
2) Things might not work the same for you.
This blog will focus on things that we both do on a regular basis; we only post about things that A) we’ve experienced first-hand or B) have researched thoroughly. We have no intention to mislead you, but readers must understand that your mileage may vary.
3) We are not licensed financial advisors.
Joey’s posts should not be misconstrued as financial advice. Or tax advice. Read those two previous sentences again. This is just some random Joe(y) writing some stuff he thinks he’s learned on the internet. Got that straight?!?!
4) We are not responsible for what you do with your computers.
Same goes for Joe’s posts about computers. Data security is a constantly changing field, and one that Joe isn’t directly a part of anymore. If you’re basing your company-critical network security policy on a couple of blog posts and something goes wrong, you have no one to blame but yourself. Also, computer repair always carries the risk of data loss or breaking hardware. Any guides posted have worked for Joe in the past but may not work for you.
